T The Effect Of Serum Leptin Level On Subfertility & obesity in Patient With Polycystic Ovaries In Iraqi Population

Abstract:
Background: Subfertility is an expanding problem in the world influencing about 10-15% of the population. Couples with polycystic ovaries female partner usually have an extra risk of being infertile. For different reasons, polycystic ovaries incident is increasing between females. Adipose tissue is a functional endocrine-like organ, that secretes a variety of cytokines and adipokines(mainly Leptin). Leptin, a hormone that is believed to be released by different cell types (mainly by adipocytes) controls energy stores and reflects body fat stores. Elevated serum level of leptin found to be closely impaired oocyte development.
Aim of the study: To determine the association between serum leptin level and body weight in subfertile women with polycystic ovaries.
Material and methods: A case-control study was done during the period Sep.2020-Jan.2021.The study includes 88 women whose age range from 18-40 years and their BMI ranging between(18.5-40) Kg/m², 44 of them was infertile with polycystic ovaries, and the other 44 women are fertile women with normal ovarian texture. For both groups, leptin levels were measured.
Result: There is a significant association between serum leptin level and subfertility especially in overweight and obese females compared to the control group.
Conclusions: The significant association between serum leptin levels and reproductive capacity in different bodyweight groups especially in females with polycystic ovaries points to the important function of this adipokine in subfertility pathogenesis especially in overweight and obese females in comparison to the control group.
